Hi, I'm Tim (sova) sister. He told me about this web page of the Sova Family, I really love it. Tim has really done a lot of research from our granparents Laura & George, it's amazing how much he has put together. I knew we had a very large family of Sova's but never realized there are so many of you out there I haven't met, I hope to get to know more about you & how we are related. Tim is my youngest brother of 4, I'm the only girl, I'm sure you can imagine the fun I had with my brothers!!ha I love them all, they are great brothers to have. well bye for now sherrie (sova) gilboe

Cool site, I think my brother Stan has already visited; we're from Pennsylvania; My grandfather was a miner in Northeastern PA in the 30's and died in the mines from a cave in. I see a Nicole visited; my daughter's name is Nicole. Wonder if we are related in any way. Great Site!!!!
Wow!! What a really great layout for your website and for the Sova family(ies). I'm from Cheboygan originally. My grandparents were Ephriam and Lauretta (Chamberlain) Sova. Hi! Just thought I'd throw in my 2 cents worth. I see my husband's cousin, Elaine, signed in above. I just found out about this site today from Tim, who is one of the many Sovas I don't know. I'm a Sova by marriage. I've got a question. How do you all pronounce the name? My husband's branch says "Sovee." In fact, I've met people who had connections in Cheboygan before, and they're the only ones outside the family who knew how to pronounce it. Do you all say "Sovee" or "Sova", the way it looks? Just curious.

My Uncle Perry Neuman has very descriptive information on the Sova Family! Three years ago our family got our Indian licence and we have found out alot about our ancestors! Does anyone know Don & Lillian Neuman of Cheboygan? I live in Kingston Ontario Canada now, originally from near Cornwall, Ontario. My tree of the family traces to the french Sauve. The change occured in about 1850. One of the Sauve sons married outside the religion and never saw the family again. They then took the english spelling of Sova. There was a family of 10+ and one settled near Cornwall and the rest went across North America. One settled in Oswego, I believe the name was Thomas. I actually have a picture of him in front of his house on Tillman Street or a similar name. The others went to Winnipeg Manitoba, San Fransisco?, Hawaii, Whitehorse Yukon and other we have not been able to track. Contact me if you may be from this branch to see if we can track down the branches.

Just wanted to sign in again and say "Hi!" to all you Sovas ("Nightowl" in Czech) out there. I'm from Southwestern PA, father was a coal miner by Uniontown, PA. He later moved to Macedonia, OH. His parents were Stephen Sova and Mary Shuba Sova who came over on the boat around 1899-1902. I have the trunk in my attic that they brought from Austria/Hungary. Their children were: Andrew Charles Sova (married Isabel Phillips), John "Yan" Sova, Aliquippa, PA; Joseph Michael Sova, Macedonia, OH (married Lucy Chiorazzi), Anne Sova Rodgers, Marie Sova Childers,Chicago; Pauline Sova Fenn, Chicago. All are deceased. Only Joseph Sova had children and passed on the name. He had Michael and Nancy Sova. Mike has no children I have two who I passed MY surname to--Daniel M. Sova (20 yrs.) and Thomas C. Sova(11yrs.). That's it in a nutshell!! Feel free to email me with anything interesting!!!! Happy Day!!!!

Fun reading about other Sovas. My grandparents, Paul and Katherine came over from Czech. around 1918 thru Ellis island. Had three sons and one daughter. All boys served in WW2 two with Patton and one in Marines. All lived in Garfield ,NJ. Probably about fifty or more of us Jersey Sovas now.For the NY Sovas, one of your ancestors won medal of Honor in Civil War, Joseph Sova.Had no idea there were so many other Sovas. I'm really surprised to hear about all the Sova's in Michigan. I live in Big Rapids, along with the rest of my close family. My grandfather is Loren Sova. His children are Gene Sova, Carol Sova, Alec Sova, and my father's name is Roger Walter Sova. The Sova family that I married into is originally from a small town in Poland, now a part of the Ukraine, called Kolke. My husband's grandfather was the Jewish Chief Rabbi of the town of Kolke, near Lutzk. His grandfather was married to a woman for 35 years with no children. When she died, he married Doba Resnik Sova and had four sons. During the war, the older two sons were away in school and escaped the destruction of the Jews of the town. The question remained if the two sons who remained were killed with their Mother in the forest of Kolke. An eyewitness says he remembers only one son being taken with the Mother. The question being if there is another surviving brother with any family. If you know of any Sova family members who have a Jewish heritage, I would appreciate any leads. Hi folks I've been researching my family tree. In the Province of Ontario, Canada. In the 1700-1900 range the English translation for the French name of Sauve is Sovey, Sovie, Sova. This is from Canadian Government census records. In the research I've got from France Sauve is spelled ten more ways.It is very prevelant in the cross border translations. Canada to the USA. During my research I found this site. Sorry to offend anyone.
Just a little back ground on the Sauve. "SOVA".If anyone wants to dig you'll find the Sauve name origiates in the Bourgogne, France region. There appears to be two seperate lines. One dates to a Francois Sauve borne 1637.Married Marie Malleret de Libourne about 1650.The other line I don't have info on but supposedly goes back to 1200.In the same area.

My name is Carl Sova. I am originally from Brno, Czech Republic and escaped the communists in May 1948. My family-"Sova" has been in the Moravia, Czech Republic for generations. I came to the US in Jan. 1950, sponsored Masaryk Institure in New York. I went on to received my master'sdegree from Penn State and Doctorate from Ohio State and have had a long career with the Federal Government in the health and sciences departments.

Hi folks Merry Christmas & Happy New Year.Durring the last two years I've found a lot of missing Sova's in North America.Most came through Belle River Ontario,Canada and went all over North America.Several querries on this site indicate many of you are related.At least 150 years ago you had the same ancestor's.I've been researching a couple of specific families that's how I know of the relation ships.The ones that came through Ontario& Quebec into New york State have the same Ancestry only farther back.As far as Sova's on the rest of the planet we are probably related farther back.I've found all spellings Sova,Sovey,Sovie and several more all derived from the French name Sauve.If anyone would like information.Just email me for it.If I have it or can find it I'll pass it on.This site is a great idea for connections.

Well..I'm impressed. I never expected to find much when i just typed in Sova in a random search engine. I personally live in Saginaw, MI. I also come from a large line of Sovas. My dad has 7 brothers and 2 sisters most of which are around the saginaw area.

Hi, just did a random search on Sova. This is great. My great grandmother was Julia Anna Sova. She was born in Jackson Michigan according to her birth certificate, but her mother - Nellie Tobin and father - Charles F. Sova were born in Union Hill (Webster) New York. I'm trying to locate relatives or anyone with info out there who might know who Julia's brothers or sisters might have been. (It states on her birth certificate that she was the fourth born). I live in Rochester New York and was told my Sova relations were French Canadian. I also have a memorium card for a Mary Sova, if any one would like a copy you can email me for more info. Hi, all the Sova family! It is great to find there are so many Sova. My Dad is Yuri Sova from Russia, Krasnodar region, now we all live in Ukraine (Dad, Mum - tatyana Sova and me - Anna) After getting married I retained my maiden surname, as my husband wanted it. All our family comes from Zaporozhie kozacks, who were removed by the Russian queen Katherine the 2nd to Krasnodar around the year 1700.They constituted a powerful army of Russia, and kozacks from Kuban river were considered the strongest ones. But there are not many Sova there, the name is rare. The origin is from common Slavic word (as Check Sova mentioned) - meaning night owl. Please if there are any relations to our branch or just have something to comment, do write. Love to all Sova!
Hi, When I was growing up I was best friends with Robyn Sova and she has been on my mind lately and so I thought I would do a search and low and behold I was so surprised to find this site. I would like to add an interesting twist to this whole SOVA name thing. It all began in the 1920's, when my grandfather Sovak and his wife immigrated from Russia to the US. They moved directly to Wilkes-Barre, PA. where he persued a career as a coal miner in the nearby hills and eventually opened a bar. He and his wife had several children of Roman Catholic persuasion; Paul (my dad), Peter, Mary, Joe, and John. It turns out, the name means "OWL" in Russian. Also the K at the end of the name is somewhat silent (sort of an AUK, sound). Everyone in the family, Except dad is a SOVAK. Seems he dropped the K upon entering the Coast Guard in 1949 because as grandma said, this was the actual spelling. I continue to battle with the simple 4 letter name as people insist on misspelling it (especailly wanting to put an 'L' in there!. Some of the common goofs....Silva, Silver, Silfa, Silba, Sofa, Sonar, Sober, Savoy, Sour, Sulfur, Sovar, Souva. Sufficed to say, I am the last of this line of Sovas as the remaining family members are all Sovaks. A few are in PA. and the rest have moved to Florida. I have devoted the past 20 years to aerospace engineering at Boeing, Bell, and Gulfstream. ENJOY!

Which Sova family are you from? My Great Grandfather was Louis(Joachim) Sauve. My grandfather was John Baptiest Sova,my father Alvin A.Sova. Our ancesters came from France, but they were in Canada first before they came to Michigan by way of Port Huron, and settled in Saginaw for a few years before coming to Cheboygan. Louis and Katherina had six children. Charles,Antoine,Maria Helena,William,John B.,and Louis Jr. Don't know if thios your line or not. There are so many Sova"s in Cheboygan. Would like to here from you.
Hi, we are from a small place in Ontario,Canada called Glen Roy.Before finding this site, we never even realized that there were so many Sovas all over the place. In the 1850's a family of sovas split up.One of them was our great great grndafather, Frances Sova.We know that one of his brothers went to Oswego,and his name may have been Joseph or Thomas.

I'm one of two sons from Raymond & Ethel Sova (Quesnell) both passed on recently. My brothers Name is James A. Sova. We both still live in Cheboygan, MI. My Son Venard showed me the ans web site. Raymond's brothers were Lawrence, Oscar, Ernie, Theadore (SP), Oliver, and Elric. These are only the brothers I can remember and I know he had several sisters.
I am originally from Ogdensburg, NY. My relatives are originally from Canada (French). My Grandfather's name was William Harrison Sova, who had an Uncle that moved to northern Michigan in the late 1800's. I was stationed onboard Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw from 72-74 and married Connie Moulder from Cheboygan. I played softball with Terry Sova on the River Rats Team. Until I went to Cheboygan, I did not know of any other Sova's in America. Most of my relatives in my home town changed their name to Sovie, the way it is pronounced in Michigan. Hello, Sova family! I enjoyed visiting your wonderful web site! I've been researching my family history and was surprised to find so many other people with a Sova family history in Michigan. I'm trying to track down my great-great-grandmother's family. Her name was Anna Beaudet (various spellings, I'm not even sure about this one) 1858 (Canada)-1939 (Saginaw, MI). Her mother's maiden name was Sova. I'm not sure what happened to Anna's father, but her mother remarried to a Moses Rivers. I only know of one full brother that Anna had; his name was Ralph. The family lived in Bay county for a while, and all I know is Anna married Seth Hall and they lived in Saginaw. Ralph, I believe, is buried at a Chippewa Indian cemetery, but I don't think he was Chippewa. We (my family and I) are thinking they were Mohawk, but not sure. Anyway, I would really appreciate it if you could give me any information on your family that you think would help me trace Anna's mother's family. Thanks! Jennifer Tracy
I'm looking for my old college room mate, Ron Sova, from Cheboygan Mi. He'd be about 60 as am I. We went to Northwestern Michigan in Traverse City from Fall 1962 through Spring 1964. I believe he graduated from Cheboygan High School in 1961 or 1962. He was studying to be an Engineer and was planning on attending University of Michigan. I went there also and got a BS in Computer Engineering but much later. I haven't been able to find any mention of him in the Aluumni records for the Engineering school or the school itself. I knew several people from Cheboygan that went to the school in Traverse City but he was a standout. I'd appreciate any news and maybe a mention. Thanks, W. R. Gordon

My name is Thomas Sova and I live with much of my family in Baltimore, Maryland. My name is of Polish decent and was originally spelled SOWA but pronounced SOVA. Becuase of the frequent pronunciation errors, (Slavic languages don't have the letter V in their alphabet, hence, the composer Wagner) and took it upon himself to change the spelling. There are many Sova's here in Marlyand and are probably not related because of the spelling change from Sowa to Sova. I am aware of a few who have made the same change as my family. It would be interesting to find out. My grandfather was a Marine, faought in WWII, Korea, and Nam. He was a master gunnary sgt. I am currently in law school and the first person in my family to get an advanced educational degree.

John's Father was named Louis Sauve from Canada. I have been told that Louis(My Great-Great Grandfather) took part in changing it from Sauve to Sova. Louis was born in Canada in 1819 and died in Traverse City, MI in 1906. My father, Dave, was born and raised in Cheboygan Michigan. I think It would be great if I could go farther back than Louis. I was married to Lynwood J. Sova now deceased. He was the son of Louis E. and Genevieve C. Leblanc Sova. Louis's father was Ephraim Sova. There are still a lot of this family living in Cheboygan and another bunch of them living in the Grand Rapids area.
I come from a cheboygan family named sova as well. My grandparents are Harold and Ruth Sova. My grandfather grew up in cheboygan, but none of the names on your site are framiliar. I will have to ask my parents for names of my great-grandparents and all great uncles. The Neuman family of cheboygan are Sova's Lil Sova-Neuman is my grandfathers sister. Also what I found interesting is our Sova decendants are French as well and the name was changed from Sauvie to Sova. Perhaps these two families have some not too distant ties?

I have been a Sova Since 1948, My parents moved to phoenix arizona in 1946, and soon thereafter my Dads Family joined them, 4 brothers and 1 sister. They the boys and their Dad built the home that was occupied by Sova's until 1999, that is a long time.In my Dads family only his sister and two brothers are still living. I have 2 cousins from My Aunt Dee and my fathers brother in Lavonia.

G'day, saying hello from the Canadian Sova's, reading your history story it's the same as ours. My relatives came from france to ellis island and then headed north to canada, settling in the southern ontario area of Orilla and then migrated north to Deep River Ontario and we've been here since the early 50's.

He had one brother that I remembered hearing about that he thought resided in Michigan. The name Jake rings a bell, but I am not sure. I just ran across this web sight and thought it interesting. My grandfather came from Austria in 1917. His family was from Czechoslovakia. My grandfather's name was Antonin Sova, later shortened to Anton to Germanize his name in Austria. He was named after his uncle Antonin Sova, the writer and poet. He is still taught in the Czech Republic today and is known as the "emotional historian of the 1890's". My great grandfather was Francis Sova. His brother John was Antonin the poet's father.
